Letter to the Editor:

I am writing this letter to help clear the air and settle any misunderstandings between any members of the United Professional Firefighters of Derry Union Local 4392, the public, and Town Councilors of Derry.

On Tuesday night, after the Town Council meeting, there were NO threatening statements made or directed towards Councilors Coyle or Carney or anyone else. However, one statement was made, “Don’t worry when you call 9-1-1 we will still show up, even without a contract.” How or if either councilor could misconstrue this statement to what they claim to have heard, I DON’T KNOW. I was present that night and it took those councilors about 20 seconds to exit the Town Hall and get to their cars, as it was raining heavily.

I have spoken with our members and also to 2 members of the public that were present and have NO ties to the fire department or our Union. Everyone has stated that nothing threatening or malicious was said.

Let me say very clearly that we ARE professionals and take the publics’ trust and welfare very, very, seriously. I would not condone any member saying anything in a threatening manner. I also do not condone Mr. Coyle calling any of members,” Thugs.” I would hope that Mr. Coyle regrets saying that to the media and issues an apology to our members. We have feelings too!

I want everyone to know that I did call both Town Councilors on Thursday and spoke to them. I stressed to them that they and their families should not feel threatened and their health and safety is just as important to us, as any other person or citizen in Derry.

We want all of the citizens of Derry to know that just because we don’t have a contract, we will provide the same compassion, respect and professionalism that is the backbone of our every member of Local 4392. We have been without contracts in the past, for many years, and we never wavered or delivered less than our best efforts when called to do so.

In closing, I hope that this puts to rest these absurd and unfounded accusations. I hope the Derry Town Councilors, who have shown their employees little or no appreciation, begin to do so!

Respectfully submitted,
